Art Consulting as Problem Solving

This entryway is strangely cramped. The door hangs a mere 3" from the perpendicular wall which is only three feet long. What on earth does one do with a space like that? Other challenges: the light comes in indirectly from competing angles creating layers of shadows and sunspots. Finally, the house is on a hill in a “seismically active” area so the plaster cracks return as soon as they’re repaired. Solution: life-sized mermaid art. She’s so flat that she fits behind the door. She’s indestructible so safe for use in an area that gets lots of banging about. And that problematic light and cracking? They feel like ocean water swirling around her.
